The Ukrainian President's Decree 'On the Monetary Reform in Ukraine' was declared on August 25, 1996.The monetary reform in Ukraine was carried out on September 2 – 16 in accordance with the President's Decree. The use of karbovanets for all kind of payments was stopped after September 1996 and Hryvnia became the only legal tender of payment within Ukraine. Alphabetic code of currency – UAH, digital code – 980, abbreviation – грн. The bank – emitter – National Bank of Ukraine. Monetary unit: Hryvnia = 100 kopecks. The circulation сoins are: 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopiyok, 1 hryvnia. In this list must be the 2 Hryvnias coin 'Coin of Ukraine' (1996, mintage – 250 000), which was planned National Bank of Ukraine as circulation coin, but for many reasons didn’t become it and was consist in commemorative coins of Ukraine, symbolizing Monetary reform of 1996. The change coins are 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopiyok. NBU Mint logotype was entered since 2001 by the decree of National bank of Ukraine (NBU) from 08.06.2000. Graphic symbol of hryvnia was entered by March 1, 2004 by the decree of National bank of Ukraine (NBU).
Graphic symbol of hryvnia consists of two elements. The first and basic element is based on hand-written variant of letter 'г' (Cyrillic alphabet) – it means the first letter in the word 'hryvnia'. The second element is two horizontal parallel lines which symbolize stability of monetary unit, high potential and growth of national Ukrainian economy. Resembling idea is used traditionally for some currencies, including American dollar.The National bank of Ukraine’s authority suppose symbol of national monetary unit chosen by bank is simple and pithy. Graphic symbol of hryvnia is very simplified. It can be kept in mind easily. It guarantees application of this sign not only among the experts but also by ordinary Ukrainians. Hryvnia’s logo is easy to be written down by hand and can be ahead of face-value and after it. www.mignews.com.ua The museum funds has got both the coins, official issued by the National Bank of Ukraine, and being available defective and substitute coin and notes accidentally hitting in the our collection.
