CHINESE LUNAR CALENDAR. YEAR OF THE PIG.

This coin struck in fine silver with the image of a pig highlighted on the reverse, celebrates the Year of the Pig dating from 18 February 2007 to 6 February 2008.
This year of the Pig therefore completes the second of the five cycles in the 78th Chinese Lunar Calendar which began in 1984.
According to legend, Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac in 2,600BC with a complete cycle of the Lunar Calendar taking sixty years made up of five smaller cycles of twelve years each. Each year is represented by an animal since, as one legend has it, when Buddha summoned the animal kingdom to determine how to restore order in the world, only twelve animals put in an appearance. They were thus chosen to represent the Chinese zodiac cycle and in order of their arrival, Buddha gave each one a year of its own, bestowing the nature and characteristics of each animal on people born in the corresponding year. The Rat arrived first, some say by devious means, and the Pig was last.
Those born in the Year of the Pig are very loving and make loyal partners. Chivalrous and gallant, they display tremendous fortitude and great honesty. They do not make many friends but when they do, they are friends for life. They are most compatible with those born in the Year of the Rabbit and the Year of the Sheep.
