GRAND DUCHY OF BADEN.
Baden is a historical state on the east bank of the Rhine River in the southwest of Germany.
The first division of the territory occurred in 1190, when separate lines of margraves were established in Baden and in Hachberg. Immediately prior to its extinction in 1418, Hachberg was sold back to Baden, which underwent several minor divisions itself during the next century. In 1515, the most significant division of the patrimony took place, in which the Baden-Baden and Baden-Durlach lines were established.
After the male line of Baden-Baden failed in 1771 and the two parts of Baden were reunited, the fortunes on the margraviate continued to grow. Karlsruhe, near Durlach, was developed into a well-planned city.
It became the much-enlarged Grand Duchy of Baden through the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1803 – 1806 and remained a sovereign country until it joined the German Empire in 1871, remaining a Grand Duchy until 1918 when it became part of the Weimar Republic as the Republic of Baden.
The dukes, who struck coins (in Germany Empire):
• Reign: 1856 – 1857 – Friedrich I (born: 09.09.1826 – dead: 09.28.1907),
• Reign: 1907 – 1918 Friedrich II (born: 09.07.1857 – dead: 08.08.1928).
In 1856 Friedrich I married Princess Louise of Prussia, daughter of (then the crown prince) Wilhelm I and his wife Empress Augusta, born as Princess of Saxe-Weimar. In 1906 to 50th Anniversary of wedding have been struck commemorative coins in 2 and 5 Mark.

Semicircular inscription: DEUTSCHES REICH ∙ ZWEI MARK, year of issue. 900 standard silver (Ag 900, Cu 100). Diameter – 28 mm. Weight – 11.111 g. Edge – 140 corrugations, thickness 2.1 mm. This type of coin has been struck in 1876, 1877, 1880, 1883, 1888, was in circulation in Ukraine from end of April to the middle of November, 1918. FMM hasn’t got this coin yet.
