SILVER COINS OF POLAND REPUBLIC. 1924 – 1932. I ISSUE.

Monetary system: 1 Zloty = 100 Groszy.
Coins in circulation: 1, 2, 5 Zloty.

In 1924, coins were introduced in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 groszy, 1 and 2 złote. The lowest three denominations were first minted in brass, then in bronze. The 10, 20 and 50 groszy were in nickel, with the higher denominations in silver. Gold 10 and 20 złotych coins were minted in 1925. The first circulating silver coins, designed by Tadeusz Breyer, are the 1 zloty issued in 31.10.1924, struck in Paris, and the 1925 of the same design struck in London.
In chronology of mintage, the next coins struck were the 10 zlotych and the related 20 zlotych gold commemoratives celebrating the 900th anniversary of the coronation of King Boleslaw Chrobry. These were struck in 1926 with a date of 1925.
The 10 and 20 zlotych Chrobry were the first precious metal (silver or gold) coins struck by the Warsaw mint in the 20th Century. Though they are clearly not patterns, whether the 10 and 20 zlotych issues can be considered 'circulation' strikes is a different matter. Gold 10 and 20 zlotych coins did not, in fact, circulate in interwar Poland, unless some reached circulation by error. The Polish government did not release these coins into circulation. The next coins struck were the 5 zlotych with the winged Nike, struck from 1928 to 1932.
The 1930 'Sztandar' utilizes the obverse eagle used on the Nike series, but the reverse features a banner commemorating the centennial of the 1830 – 1831 Polish uprising against Russia.
The monetary reform of early 1933 spelled the demise of what is probably the more interesting period of Second Republic circulating coinage. With some exception, the coins that followed that reform, including those dated 1932 but struck after 1932, are less inspired in design than the coins they replaced. New coins were issued since 27.08.1932.
