CHANGE COINS
OF GERMAN EMPIRE
(1873 – 1918).

The coins were in circulation in territory of Ukraine from end of April to the middle of November, 1918, as well as the coins from other municipal governments Germany.
But gold coins or rare commemorative coins were withdrawn from circulation before April, 1918, or were not in circulation in Ukraine, because they had limited mintage.
The German Empire was formed January 18, 1871. The new empire comprised 25 states:
4 kingdoms (Prussia, Württemberg, Bavaria, Saxony);
6 grand duchies (Baden, Mecklenburg-Schwerin; Hesse and by Rhine, Oldenburg, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Mecklenburg-Strelitz);
5 duches (Anhalt, Brunswick, Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Saxe-Altenburg);
7 principalities (Waldeck, Lippe, Schaumburg-Lippe, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, Reuss Elder Line, Reuss Junior Line);
3 free cities (Bremen, Hamburg and Lübeck).
King of Prussia became German Emperor, head of government – Chancellor.
Change coins were all the same from all German states. The states had the right to issue gold and silver coins of higher value than 1 Mark.
Mint marks:
A – Berlin (mark of the Berlin mint since 1750),
B – Hanover (mark of the Hanover mint in 1866 – 1878),
C – Frankfurt,
D – Munich (mark of the Munich mint since 1872),
E – Muldenhutten (mark of the Muldenhutten mint in 1887 – 1953),
F – Stuttgart (mark of the Stuttgart mint since 1872),
G – Karlsruhe (mark of the Karlsruhe mint since 1872),
J – Hamburg (mark of the Hamburg mint since 1873).

Monetary system: German Mark = 100 Pfennig.
Coins in circulation: 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 Pfennig, 1/2 Mark, 1 Mark, 2, 3, 5 Mark.

Description: Obverse: The arms of the country with a so-called small eagle, above it – the German imperial crown; on a breast of an eagle – board with the arms of Prussia, around it – a Prussian award of the Black Eagle with a circuit, on both sides from a tail of an eagle – mint mark 'A' (variants: A, Â, Ñ, D, E, F, Í, G, J). Reverse: Face value '1' in the circle. Overhead the composition there is a semicircular inscription: DEUTSCHES REICH. 1889. PFENNIG. Diameter – 17.5 mm. Weight – 2 g. Edge – smooth, thickness 1.2 mm. Mintage: 20 750 000. Mint mark – Berlin (À). This type of coin have been struck in 1873 – 1877, 1885 – 1889. This type of coin has been struck in 1890 – 1916. The coin was in circulation in Ukraine from end of April to the middle of November, 1918, restored in circulation in Germany in 1924, withdrawn from circulation since 28.02.1942.

The coin was in circulation in Ukraine from end of April to the middle of November, 1918.

Reverse: Face value '2' in the circle. Overhead the composition there is a semicircular inscription: DEUTSCHES REICH. 1874. PFENNIG. Diameter – 20 mm. Weight – 3.33 g. Edge – smooth, thickness 1.5 mm. Mintage: 37 360 000. Mint mark – Berlin (À). This type of coin has been struck in 1873 – 1877. The coin was in circulation in Ukraine from end of April to the middle of November, 1918, restored in circulation in Germany in 1924, withdrawn from circulation since 28.02.1942. FMM hasn't got this coin yet.
