Description: Jubilee coin 'Petro Mohyla'. The coin is dedicated to 400th anniversary of Petro Mohyla (1596 – 1647) – the outstanding Ukrainian ecclesiastical, cultural, educational and political figure of the first half of the 17th century, the Metropolitan of Kyiv and Halych (since 1632), one of the founders of the first higher school in Ukraine and Eastern Europe – the Kyiv-Mohyla Collegium (later – Academy).
Obverse: There is a depiction of a fragment 'Triumphal Banner' engraving by Shchyrskyi, made in honour of Prokop Kalachynskyi (1697 – 1702), the rector of the Kyiv-Mohyla Collegium. On the fragment foreground there is a depiction of Athena Pallada, as an allegoric symbol of science. She is holding the banner staff, changing gradually to baroque decoration of the obverse. Near the patroness of science there is a group of students of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. On the background there is the building of this educational institution. Petro Mohyla had been for a long time a guardian and a lecturer of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Against a background of the fragment there is the Small State Emblem of Ukraine. Around the coin circumference there are inscriptions: УКРАЇНА (UKRAINE) – above and 10 ГРИВЕНЬ (10 HRYVNIAS) – underneath in two lines. Under the depiction of the Academy Building there are inscriptions: year of issue – at the left and designations of Аg 925 and coin's pure weight in two lines, at the right. The whole composition is framed with the Ukrainian baroque ornament.
Reverse: There is a portrait of Petro Mohyla, made by an unknown artist of 18th century (now preserved at the National Museum of History of Ukraine). Above the baton there is a three line inscription: ПЕТРО МОГИЛА and 1596 – 1647.
925 standard silver. Weight – 33.1 g., diameter – 38.61 mm., edge – incised. Artists: Aleksander and Sergei Kharuk, Vladymyr Taran and Vitaliy Kozachenko; sculptors: Robert Cotowicz.
Put in circulation since December 25, 1996. Mintage: 5 000. The coin was struck at the Mint of Poland in 1996.
