COMMEMORATIVE AND JUBILEE SILVER 20 HRYVNIAS COINS ISSUED IN 1997.

Description: Commemorative coin 'The Savior Cathedral in Chernihiv'. The commemorative coin is dedicated to the Holy Saviour's Cathedral, the outstanding architectural monument of Kyivan Rus, erected in 1033 – 1034 during the rule of Chernihiv Prince Mstislav.
Obverse: In central circle framed with a conventionalized vegetal ornamentation there is a fragment depiction of 'Holy Teklya' fresco of 11th century. Above, there is the Small State Emblem of Ukraine. Around the coin circumference there is inscription: УКРАЇНА (UKRAINE). Underneath there is the year of issue and in two lines: 20 ГРИВЕНЬ (HRYVNIAS), the coin's face value. The word 'ГРИВЕНЬ' is located around the coin circumference. To the left and to the right from the figure '20' there are designations of metal and coin's pure weight. The whole composition is framed with circumference beads decoration.
Reverse: In center there is a depiction of the Savior Cathedral's western facade. Around coin circumference there are inscriptions: ЧЕРНІГІВ (CHERNIHIV) – to the left, СПАСЬКИЙ СОБОР (THE SAVIOR CATHEDRAL) – above and ХI ст. – to the right. The inscriptions are separated from one another with solar signs. Underneath, there is a ribbon with the inscription ДУХОВНІ СКАРБИ УКРАЇНИ.
925 standard silver. Weight – 33.1 g., diameter – 38.61 mm., edge – incised. Artists: Aleksander Ivakhnenko and Anatoliy Snizhko; sculptor: Robert Cotowicz.
Put in circulation since June 24, 1996. Mintage: 5 000. The coin was struck at the Mint of Poland.

Description: Commemorative coin 'Cossack Mamay'. The coin is the first one from a series 'Heroes of Cossack Age', presenting a gallery of characters of glorious sons of Ukraine and most important events in the country's history of 16th – 18th centuries.
Obverse: In the middle of the beads circumference decoration, there is the composition symbolizing the national idea of Unification of Ukraine – unification of all Ukrainian territories: the emblematic figures of the Holy Michael Archistrategos in a knightly attire and with a spear, the patron of Kiev and crowned lion of Galitch and Volhyn principalities hold the Small State Emblem of Ukraine-Trident on the shield. Over the composition, there is the year of coin issue. Above, around the coin external circumference there are inscriptions: УКРАЇНА (UKRAINE) and 20 ГРИВЕНЬ (20 HRYVNIAS) in two lines. All inscriptions are separated from one another with baroque ornaments and griffins depictions. At the left from the figure '20', there are metal designations and coin's pure weight.
Reverse: In the middle of the beads circle, there is a composition popular in 18th – 20th century – folk art of Ukraine: Cossack Mamay dressed in a rich coat edged with fur, sits in a Turkish way, smokes a pipe and plays bandura. Around him there are traditional depictions of attributes of Cossack military life of that period: a horse with a good outfit, tied to a spear with a small flag on its top, plunged into soil; green oak-tree with a hanging sabre; a pistol and a stone powder case; high Turkish hat and a bottle of 'okovyta' (Ukrainian vodka). Around the coin external circumference there are inscriptions КОЗАК МАМАЙ (COSSACK MAMAY) – at the left and ЛИЦАР ВОЛІ І ЧЕСТІ (THE KNIGHT OF FREEDOM AND HONOUR) – at the right. Above, these inscriptions are separated with a small flag at the spear top, underneath – with a conventionalized guelder-rose spray.

Description: Jubilee coin 'Kyiv Contract Fair'. The coin is dedicated to 200th anniversary of opening in Kyiv (in 1797) the yearly Contract Fair – an important event for commercial-trade and social-political life of Ukraine at the end of 18th – beginning of 20th centuries.
Obverse: There is the Small State Emblem of Ukraine in the center of the composition made with conventionalized depictions of four crosswise located rolls of paper against a background of horizontal lines. On the rolls there are inscriptions: УКРАЇНА (UKRAINE) above, 20 ГРИВЕНЬ (20 HRYVNIAS), underneath in two lines, the year of coin issue and metal designations and coin's pure weight – at the right.
Reverse: In the center there is a depiction of Kyiv City Council building, in which the first Contract Fair took place (from the drawing 'The Facade of the old Kyiv fortress' by M.Razhen (1775 – 1786). On the foreground, there is the Podil embankment from Dnipro side and a moored-two-mast ship. Above at the left, there is a depiction of scales. Around the coin circumference there are inscriptions: КИЇВСЬКИЙ КОНТРАКТОВИЙ ЯРМАРОК (KYIV CONTRACT FAIR) – above and 200 РОКІВ (200 YEARS) – underneath.
