SOUVENIR COINS OF FAROE ISLANDS

The Faroe Islands is a country in the Norwegian Sea , approximately halfway between Scotland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands are a self-governing country under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing dependency of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. Over the years, the Faroese has taken control of most matters. Areas that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defence, police, justice, currency and foreign affairs.
The Faroe Islands were associated with and taxed by Denmark and Norway up to 1814, when the Kalmar Union broke up. Scandinavia was in political turmoil when Denmark took over the Faroes, Iceland and Greenland in 1814.
Danish Monopoly trade broke up in 1814. These 2011 dated unofficial pattern coins picturing native wildlife are the first issues for the Faroe Islands in 70 years. The latest coins was issued in 1941.
Obverse of new coins depicted the coat of arms of the Faroe Islands. It first appears in one of the mediæval chairs in Kirkjubøur from around the 15th century. It depicts a Ram on a shield. Later uses show a Ram in a seal used by the Løgrættumenn, members of the Old Faroese law Court, the Løgting.
