Darlehnskassenscheine were covered not by gold, but by industrial and agricultural goods.

Description: Face side: On the background there is an ornamental vignette, on its left and right sides – denomination 1 MARK. Beneath it – issuer information. Over it there are gothic inscriptions in 4 lines: DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN / EIN MARK / BERLIN, DEN 12. AUGUST 1914 / REICHSSCHULDENVERWALTUNG. Beneath it – signatures. In the right upper corner – there is red serial number. In the left bottom corner – relief stamping of Reichsschuldenverwaltung, in the right bottom corner – red stamping of Reichsschuldenverwaltung.
Back side: In the center of the background – coat of arms of German Empire and ornamental pattern, to the left and to the right – denomination 1. Semicircular inscriptions – DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN (above), EIN MARK (beneath). To the left and to the right – denomination: 1 MARK 1. Background with ornament: 1 MARK.
Issued in 12.08.1914. Dimensions: 95 õ 60 mm. Watermark: 'geometrical ornament'. The predominant color is green.
6 digit serial number 421 ∙ 333324. The series is designated by 3 figures, all signs of serial number have the identical size.
There are:
1. One red stamping, obverse color is light-green. Series 1 – 239.
2. One red stamping, obverse color is dark-green. Series 695 – 850.
3. Banknotes were spent from 1917. Ornamented. One red stamping. Series 137 – 144, 241 – 718, 839 – 970.
3. Banknotes were spent from 1920. Ornamented. One blue stamping. Series 1 – 120.

Over it there are gothic inscriptions in 4 lines: DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN / FÜNF MARK / BERLIN, DEN 5. AUGUST 1914 / REICHSSCHULDENVERWALTUNG. Beneath it – signatures and issuer information.
Back side: In the center – crown, sceptre and sword and two stamping of Reichsschuldenverwaltung, above – denomination 5. To the left and too the right in oval vignette – woman’s head (allegory of Germany). Over the crown – gothic inscription in 2 lines: DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN / FÜNF MARK. In the right upper and left bottom corners – there is serial number. Background with microtext: DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN / FÜNF MARK.
