THE NOTES OF TRUST ARCTICUGOL.

Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of mainland Europe, about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. It consists of a group of islands ranging from 74° to 81° north latitude, and from 10° to 35° east longitude. The archipelago is the northernmost part of Norway. The largest settlement is Longyearbyen. The Spitsbergen Treaty (1920) recognized Norwegian sovereignty over Svalbard, and the 1925 Svalbard Act made Svalbard a full part of the Kingdom of Norway. The official language in Svalbard is Norwegian, though some areas do speak Russian.
Arktikugol (translates Arctic Coal) is a Russian state owned coal mining company that operates at Barentsburg on Svalbard, Norway. Though coal is still mined, it is not frequently exported, and the company is heavily subsidized by the Government of Russia. The company formerly also operated the coal mine at Pyramiden, also on Svalbard.
The company bought the mines at Pyramiden in 1927, and started mining operations at Barentsburg in 1932. This was in part to insure a Russian presence on the archipelago, since the Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920 insured that all countries to sign the treaty were given equally rights to natural resource exploitation. In 1998 the company closed the mine at Pyramiden, and settlement became a ghost town.
The Arktikugol had its own notes from the very beginning. The notes all carry approximately the same text: 'The Ministry for Coal Industry in the Western Areas of the Soviet Union. The State Enterprise for the Mining and Sale of Coal on the Island of Spitsbergen. ARCTICUGOL Token no. xxxxx grants the right to draw supplies from the mining company Arcticugol's stores on the Island of Spitsbergen to the amount of xxx kopeks / rubels. No loss declaration will be accepted" from 1961 the heading is replaced by: 'The Ministry of the Ocean-Going Fleet'.
